Title: Embracing our students' languages: resisting ideocide
Description: Educational and linguistic uniformity comes with the subordination or subsequent elimination of other educations, languages, and traditions (i.e. ideocide (Appadurai, A., 2006)). This workshop encourages us to:
● critically examine how teaching practices may unintentionally contribute to ideocide by devaluing student’s family or community languages.
● explore the personal and institutional challenges faced when resisting ideocide and,
● share strategies for addressing its consequences in ways that affirm students’ linguistic identities incorporating Critical Sociocultural Linguistic Literacy (CrisoLL) (Holguín Mendoza, 2018).
Presenter Bio: Dr. Sánchez Walker studies factors affecting acquisition and development of Spanish as a second and as a heritage language such as, among many others, educational context, and institutional and classroom ideologies. Her latest project investigates microaggressions experienced by Latinx students in educational institutions. Born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, she earned her Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2019. She currently teaches Spanish at Yale University.
