In order to effectively communicate in the target language, students need to move toward accuracy in their language use. Any proficiency-based program still needs to create a foundation of grammatical accuracy, on which students can build and grow.

Today’s students will not tolerate the repetitive, rote grammar exercises that many of us grew up practicing.

When we teach grammar in context instead, we not only build students’ precision, but as well help them to develop their interpretive, analytic & reasoning skills, even as early as the novice level.

About the presenter:

Sarah Johnston Brady is a reformed traditional/grammar-based world language teacher, who turned in to a proficiency proponent when her children were learning to read & write. She is currently in her 3rd decade of teaching French & Spanish, mostly to novice students at the middle school level. In addition to middle school, she has experience at the high school level, as well as elementary immersion.

For years, Sarah led the 8th grade trip to Quebec City in January, giving 175 students each year the first-hand immersive experience of Québecois language, culture & cold. She has had the privilege of serving on the RI WL frameworks task force, and hosting student teachers, training a new generation of compassionate & proficiency-focused professionals.

She learned to dance before being able to walk, and even though she can hold a tune, she prefers to sing off-key and very loudly. Likewise, she would just as soon get a groan from a dad joke, as an actual laugh!
